How to Potty Train a Puppy: A Simple Schedule That Works

Home › Training Guides › Potty Training
Quick Answer

Potty train a puppy by taking it out often (after waking, eating, drinking and playing, and every 1 to 2 hours for young pups), going to the same spot, rewarding it right after it goes, supervising closely or crating it when you can’t watch, and cleaning accidents with an enzyme cleaner. Consistency, not punishment, is what works.

Sample Potty Schedule for a Young Puppy

First thing in the morningStraight outside, before anything else
After meals and drinksWithin 5 to 15 minutes
After naps and playRight away
During the dayEvery 1 to 2 hours for young puppies, stretching out as they grow
Last thing at nightRight before bed, plus overnight trips as needed

The Golden Rules

  1. Same door, same spot, same word (like “go potty”).
  2. Reward immediately, outside, the moment your puppy finishes, not when it comes back inside.
  3. Supervise or confine. If you can’t watch your puppy, it should be in a crate or a small puppy-proofed area.
  4. Watch for signs: sniffing, circling or wandering off. That means go out now.
  5. Keep a routine for feeding times so potty times become predictable.

What to Do About Accidents

If you catch your puppy in the act, calmly interrupt and take it outside. If you find an accident later, just clean it up. Punishing after the fact only teaches a puppy to hide from you when it has to go. Use an enzyme cleaner so the smell doesn’t draw your puppy back to the same spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to potty train a puppy?

Many puppies are mostly reliable within a few weeks of consistent routine, but full reliability often takes until about 4 to 6 months of age. Every puppy is different.

How long can a puppy hold its bladder?

A common rule of thumb is roughly one hour per month of age, up to about 8 hours for adult dogs. Young puppies usually need to go out overnight too.

Should I use puppy pads?

Pads can help in apartments or for very young puppies, but they can teach puppies that going indoors is okay. If your goal is outdoors-only, go outside from the start whenever possible.

Why does my potty-trained puppy suddenly have accidents?

Common causes include too much freedom too soon, changes in routine, excitement, or a medical issue. If it’s sudden or frequent, check with your vet.
