Remote Collar Myths & Facts
Remote training collars get a lot of strong opinions online. Here are the questions we hear most often from Central New York dog owners, with honest answers based on how we train every day.
Myth: “It’s a shock collar meant to punish the dog.”
Fact: We use the remote collar as a communication tool, a tap for attention. It’s not a punishment device. The stimulation is adjustable and used at the lowest level the dog responds to, which is often below what a person can feel. The goal is focus, not fear.
Myth: “Collar-trained dogs are scared and shut down.”
Fact: When the collar is introduced correctly and paired with rewards and praise, dogs stay happy and engaged. Watch our training videos and look at the dogs’ tails, ears and energy. A well-trained dog has more freedom and more fun, not less.
Myth: “The dog will have to wear it forever.”
Fact: Training moves through phases. In the beginning the collar is used regularly. Over time we use it less and less with variable reinforcement, and many dogs become reliable with very little reliance on it. Like any training tool, including a leash or treats, some reinforcement stays part of a dog’s life. Your trainer will walk you through each phase.
| Phase 1: Teaching / Control | About 6–12+ weeks. Learn the rules and commands, then add distractions. |
|---|---|
| Phase 2: Reinforcement | About 6–12+ weeks. Gradually reduce reliance on the collar. |
| Phase 3: Maintenance | Ongoing. Minimal use. Brush up on training as needed. |
Myth: “It only works when the collar is on, so the dog doesn’t really learn.”
Fact: The collar is used to teach and to reinforce. Through consistent training, dogs learn the commands themselves and form good habits. Most owners find their dogs are much more reliable even on days the collar isn’t used.
Myth: “Positive reinforcement and remote collars don’t mix.”
Fact: They work best together. Rewards, praise and play are built into every Sit Means Sit session. The collar adds clear communication at a distance and around distractions. That combination is what balanced training is all about.
Myth: “Any remote collar from the pet store is the same thing.”
Fact: Not at all. Collars differ widely in how finely they can be adjusted and how consistent the stimulation is. Even more important, results depend on proper training: correct fit, the right level, and good timing. That’s why we coach every owner hands-on instead of just handing over equipment.
Myth: “It’s only for aggressive or ‘bad’ dogs.”
Fact: We use remote collar training with all kinds of dogs: energetic puppies (once they’re old enough), family labs, working breeds and seniors. Many owners simply want a dog that comes when called at the park or walks nicely on a busy sidewalk.
