If your walks are planned around avoiding other dogs, or you hold your breath every time the doorbell rings, you’re not alone. Reactivity and aggression are some of the most common reasons Central New York owners call us. They’re also among the most rewarding problems to fix.
Behaviors We Work On
- Lunging, barking or growling at dogs, people, bikes or cars on leash
- Aggression toward unfamiliar dogs or visitors
- Nonstop barking at the window, fence or door
- Over-arousal: jumping, mouthing and not being able to settle
- Anxiety when left alone and the destruction that comes with it
- Fearful or shut-down behavior in new places
Our Step-by-Step Approach
Each plan is customized, but reactive dogs typically progress through five stages:
1. Trust and safety
The dog has to feel comfortable with the trainer before anything else happens. We go at the dog’s pace and use a leash and, when appropriate, a muzzle to keep everyone safe.
2. A clear foundation
We teach heel, a dependable sit, place and loose-leash walking. Clear jobs give an anxious or excitable dog something constructive to do instead of reacting.
3. Control without the leash
Next comes a reliable recall and distance control, so you’re never depending on a six-foot leash to manage your dog.
4. Practicing around triggers
We gradually bring in the dogs, people and situations that used to cause outbursts, keeping your dog’s focus on the handler and rewarding calm choices.
5. You take the lead
We gradually reduce your dog’s reliance on training tools, and you practice with your trainer until you’re confident handling your dog on your own.
A muzzle doesn’t mean a bad dog. A well-fitted, comfortable muzzle is a responsible safety tool that lets a reactive dog keep learning and living a full life.
